Blue Yonder responds to ransomware attack

26 November 2024

The supply chain IT firm was struck by a cyber attack on November 21, experiencing disruption to its managed services hosted environment.

THE DISRUPTION was determined to be the result of a ransomware incident.

The attack has had impacts on customers in the UK.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: “Last week Blue Yonder suffered an outage which has impacted our warehouse management systems for fresh and produce. Ambient and frozen are unaffected. We are currently operating on our back up systems and we're working very hard to deliver for our customers across the country.”

Sainsbury’s put contingency processes in place to 'ensure smooth supply for its customers', with a spokesperson adding: "Our service has since been restored."

A Starbucks spokesperson said the disruption was limited to how employees managed their schedules in North America and was not impacting how the retailer serves customers directly, adding ‘there is no further indication of disruption to UK operations’.

Security firm Huntmetrics said: “This ransomware attack underscores a broader issue: the vulnerabilities of interconnected supply chains. Modern businesses increasingly rely on third-party digital services for critical operations, creating potential single points of failure. The incident serves as a stark reminder that cyberattacks on service providers can ripple through entire industries, affecting customers and employees alike.”

In a statement, Blue Yonder said: “The team has been working diligently together with external cybersecurity firms to make progress in their recovery process. We have implemented several defensive and forensic protocols.

“With respect to the Blue Yonder Azure public cloud environment, we are actively monitoring and currently do not see any suspicious activity.

“The experts along with the Blue Yonder team are working on multiple recovery strategies and the investigation is ongoing. At this point in time, we do not have a timeline for restoration.”

The Resilience Award

It isn’t an easy topic to broach but we have launched the Resilience Award as part of our Warehouse Transformation Awards, to turn the story of cyber attacks on its head and put focus on the companies that are bouncing back from such attacks.
