New robotic storage system is ideal for SMEs

19 April 2023

Automation provider, KNAPP has launched Open Shuttle Store, a scalable robotic storage system that is ideal for small and medium-sized enterprises.

A highly versatile solution, Open Shuttle Store may be used for straightforward storage or, alternatively, as a buffer system or for goods-to-person order picking. Featuring automated mobile robots (AMRs) called Store Bots that move through the system to store and retrieve containers, Open Shuttle Store offers short delivery and installation times, and can be easily adapted to meet future needs. “The solution is scalable and adaptable,” says Craig Rollason, Managing Director of KNAPP UK. “Open Shuttle Store can be easily scaled up in terms of storage locations or performance. It’s adaptable due to the flexible nature of the AMR technology and the modular system design, allowing the solution to be integrated easily into existing buildings. And it has shorter lead times because of its standardised design, which enables rapid configuration and installation.”

Cost-efficient solution

Open Shuttle Store provides a cost-efficient, stand-alone and scalable storage solution for low to medium throughputs. As well as storage and retrieval tasks, the Store Bots can transport containers to any work zone in the factory or warehouse. They run on battery power, recharging themselves between tasks. The load-handling device on the Store Bot can handle two containers at a time and the integrated lifter ensures that all rack levels can be reached. Containers weighing up to 35 kg are stored double-deep in the rack units, which can be of unlimited width and length and up to 4 m tall.

Fleet management software

The solution features intelligent fleet management using KiSoft FCS, KNAPP’s fleet control software. This manages and monitors all possible routes for the AMRs, automatically selecting the most suitable route for each vehicle. Equipped with sophisticated sensors, the Store Bots respond quickly to obstacles by immediately adjusting their route.

“KiSoft FCS allows you to control your Open Shuttle Store effortlessly,” continues Craig Rollason. “You can make changes to your processes and layout with just a few clicks of your mouse. You can even test changes in advance using the KiSoft FCS digital twin to simulate the impact of your plans.”

The software can be used to manage all transport orders for automated vehicles, manual forklifts or a mixed fleet from a range of manufacturers. When assigning transport orders to the various transport resources, KiSoft FCS considers not only distance and energy levels but also upcoming transport orders for optimum efficiency.
