In a time when businesses are looking for ways to cut costs, many warehouse operations are moving towards the latest innovations in warehouse automation to ensure maximum efficiency.

NavMan is a semiautomated system that can be configured to provide an interface for warehouse management software systems in standard VNA trucks. Using the warehouse management system to guide the pallet racking process, NavMan enables a truck to work in either a manual or semi automated mode. It ensures that all operators, whether experienced or novice, work at the most efficient rate.

NavMan has been installed at a number of large-scale commercial organisations including two major European pharmaceutical companies and a UK stationery chain.

Jana Vitkova, warehouse product manager at Linde MH, said: "The Navman system is a relatively simple way to allow a truck to work in a semi automated mode with major infrastructure changes, and is a very cost effective solution compared to fully automated systems.

"Linde is the market leader in VNA trucks providing the logistics expertise required to increase productivity and reduce operating costs for customers. NavMan offers a number of benefits to the user. The truck will work in the fastest possible mode for efficiency and it also ensures that all operators work in the most efficient manner.

Another benefit of the system is it eliminates the risk of pallets being placed in the wrong location in a warehouse, this is a major advantage for the pharmaceutical industry or clients with high value products." NavMan operates by taking a signal from the customer's warehouse management system into the truck control system. This will then position the truck in the exact location to either pick or deposit the load in the most efficient manner when handling full loads.

Jana continued: "At Linde we understand that every user's requirements differ so we have a specialist warehouse team that works with each client to ensure the most suitable Linde VNA truck is designed according to specification, product throughput, load size, lift heights and battery shift requirements and the NavMan system configured to match the application." Since its launch in June 2011, Linde Material Handling has experienced strong interest in this intelligent software product winning the UKWA 2011 award for Technology and innovation and being shortlisted at the 2012 FLTA Awards in the Innovation category.
