Driver Training Standard
11 May 2016
RTITB wants to work with the industry to create a marketplace where everyone knows what high quality HGV driver training looks like and how it should be delivered, which is why we have devised the RTITB LGV Driver Training Standard.
The Driver Training Standard has been created to help improve and maintain standards in LGV licence acquisition training for both training providers and organisations that provide training in-house. The Standard provides an audit-based approval system that checks the standards of your instructors, vehicles and premises and provides all approved organisations with dedicated training materials, resources and support for LGV/HGV instructors.

Training Providers
Work with us to grow your business.
In the UK, nearly 50,000 people attend driver training every year. A fifth of drivers are expected to reach retirement age in the next ten years (that’s approximately 75,000 drivers), but there has been a 31% reduction in people attending driver training.
There is a clear need for a new generation of professional drivers to keep Britain trading. That’s a big opportunity for businesses, like yours, that are involved in the training of new existing and new drivers. Achieve the LGV Driver Training Standard and you will be supported by RTITB marketing campaigns to help you maximise this opportunity and play a prominent role in setting the industry on the right road.
In-House Trainers
A fifth of drivers are expected to reach retirement age in the next ten years (that’s approximately 75,000 drivers), but there has been a 31% reduction in people attending driver training.
There is a clear need for a new generation of professional drivers to keep Britain trading. By using the LGV Driver Training Standard, your business will have all the tools it needs to deliver superior licence acquisition training in-house and will be well equipped to overcome the effects of the driver shortage.
Allocating People and Resources Efficiently
We know that developing training resources is expensive and time-consuming – and then there’s the review and maintenance cycle. Become approved by the LGV Driver Training Standard and you’ll benefit from our training development expertise, freeing up your valuable internal business resources and letting you focus them where they are most needed. We’ll supply the materials you need to plan and deliver effective training that results in a real bottom line benefit for your business.
