Wheelie successful transfer

The component division of a leading German automobile manufacturer has awarded Conveyor Systems Ltd a contract to improve the efficiency in transferring car wheel assemblies between ground and mezzanine floor levels.

CSL proposed replacing an existing vertical elevator with an 11m long 25 degree heavy duty, automotive standard, inclined belt conveyor fitted with grip top belting and high level roller side guides.

Rising 3.5m to the mezzanine, product feeds onto a 3m horizontal belt section that incorporates a “soft” curve to avoid product slip and integrates into an existing conveying system handling full wheel assemblies (tyre/wheel weighing approx 25kg). The conveyor was fitted with speed variation and featured a braked motor to ensure there was no risk of “roll back”.

A powered conveyor feeds the incline at ground level. This incorporates an existing scanner that checks wheel assembly bar codes and ensures that they are in the correct sequence to interface with the rest of the system on the vehicle assembly line.

A spokesperson started: “CSL provided us with a cost effective proposal that achieved improved efficiencies and throughput. Since installed, the system has operated with total reliability.”
