Online retail giant changing metrics in the space race

Amazon could start using cubic feet rather than square feet to measure warehouse space according to CFO Brian Olsavsky.

He told a analysts at an earnings call the change would give a clearer picture on how Amazon is becoming more efficient as its inventory grows.

The mooted shift shows the growing importance of optimising warehouse space.

Amazon expects its warehouse footage space to grow 15% in 2018, slower than the 30% growth rate over the prior two years.

The company is experimenting with multi-storey warehouses, which are best suited to densely populated areas.
