Snack food giant expands rainwater harvesting at Ashby-de-la-Zouch logistics site
Pladis, the snacking company behind brands including McVitie’s, has installed rainwater harvesting technology at a second distribution centre at its Ashby-de-la-Zouch logistics site, after halving mains water use at the first.

THE SYSTEM captures rainwater for non-drinking uses such as bathroom facilities, reducing the mains water needed for day-to-day operations. It is expected to cut water use at the second distribution centre by 25% once established.
It follows a similar system installed at the site’s main distribution centre in 2024, which has cut mains water use there by 50%, saving 2.5 million litres in the past year.
pladis has made a five-figure investment in the project across the site. The systems were installed by East Midlands firm CDPS, and the project was led by the site’s ECO team, which brings together employees from across the business to identify more sustainable ways of working.
Together, the two distribution centres hold around 90,000 pallets and dispatch products including McVitie’s and Jacob’s to major UK retailers.
Stewart McCollam, health and safety manager at the site, said: “Achieving a 50% reduction in mains water use so far is a fantastic result and shows the impact of practical changes across our operations. It’s a great example of how our teams are taking what works well in one part of our operation and applying it elsewhere to make our logistics operations more efficient and resilient.”
