Permanent contracts work for Advanced Supply Chain

Advanced Supply Chain chief executive, Mike Danby, says permanent employees are proving to be a benefit to the company despite the prominence of temporary employees within the industry.

Temporary employment contracts are no stranger to the logistics industry. In fact, for a lot of companies within the industry, temporary employees make up the majority of the workforce. The nature of our industry often means there is no other option than to bring employees in under temporary contracts.

But there is a case for reducing the amount of agency workers. A change in contracts could bring a change in culture, bringing higher productivity and ultimately higher efficiency all year round.

At Advanced Supply Chain we still utilise temporary contracts for absolutely essential times in the year, however our preference is to employ people directly, and with permanent contracts. This may not be the cheapest option out there, but it can be the most efficient.

Since securing two major long-term contracts this month, we have transferred around 50 agency workers onto permanent contracts as well as taking on another 30 employees to join our 80 existing staff.

We have taken these wins as an opportunity to invest in our existing and new staff. It will absolutely cost us more, both in time and effort but we’re confident that the returns on investment will prove our worth in going against the industry grain.

By making staff ours, we can start to invest in the future of the company. These employees will benefit from real in-depth training that will bring a highly skilled and productive workforce, becoming a key asset to which we will use to drive the business forward.

It’s not only the investment in training that will bring benefits to the business. With the security of a permanent job comes morale, and further opportunities for employees. A sense of value is achieved and employees can truly integrate into the company’s culture inevitably improving motivation and therefore productivity. Even safety within the company improves with the introduction of more permanent employees.

Yes, it may cost more initially, but a highly-skilled and motivated workforce can bring a huge payback to your business by letting your employees grow alongside you.
