Suited to long runs

Combilift has added to its 4-way sideloader portfolio with 4 wheel models designed for long runs.

Combilift launched the multi-directional Combi-SL sideloaders around ten years ago.

These were enthusiastically received by operations that had previously used conventional sideloaders but were looking for the extra manoeuvrability, block stacking ability and storage optimisation that 4-way machines could deliver.

Ever aware of customer feedback however, Combilift has recently gone down the four-wheeled route with its latest development – the two directional 4WSL, available with lift capacities of 5 and 6 tonnes.

Martin McVicar explains this move: “On the whole, customers prefer the multi-directional principle but in certain sectors, particularly where long runs are required, a four wheel model is preferable. However a perennial problem reported with other brands was overheating during prolonged operation.”

Combilift design engineers counteracted any risk of this by incorporating a single Bosch Rexroth variable piston hydrostatic drive motor coupled with a rugged and proven JCB differential axle as used on the JCB 3CX backhoe model. This enables long distance travel at high speeds over extensive sites such as ports for example and eliminates any concern of overheating. Very low maintenance wet brakes are fitted as standard on the drive and front steering axles.

The Combi-CB was a groundbreaking development, says Combilift, being the first to incorporate 4-way technology into a small counterbalance truck, and it has gone on to become one of the company’s best selling models. Sales rose 40% in 2013 compared to the previous year, and Martin McVicar attributes this to the ongoing preference for one truck capable of performing multiple tasks. The builders’ merchant sector is a case in point as loads come in all shapes and sizes, from big bags of bulk product, pallets of bricks and blocks to pipes and lengths of timber.

Originally available as a 2.5t capacity model, the range has now been extended and these nifty universal machines come with capacities of up to 4t, various power options (LPG, diesel or AC electric) and as with all Combilift products they can be customised to perfectly suit individual requirements.

Combilift originally made its name in the materials handling sector with its 4-way forklifts designed for the safe and space saving of long loads.

Safety and space saving are still high on the agenda for the Irish manufacturer but it has considerably widened its range since it was established, as MD McVicar points out. “Our Aisle-Master articulated trucks are valued for maximising pallet density in the warehouse as well as for their robust build and reliable operation and the counterbalance design 4-way Combi-CBs are designed for handling mixed sizes of products.”
