Your automated supply chain is only as strong as its weakest link
So, you’ve just invested heavily in this shiny, new, and very expensive, automation system which the manufacturer assures you will revolutionise your picking and packing operation. However, as we all know, a chain is only ever as strong as its weakest link. In this case, the weakest link could well be your choice of pallet.
But let’s take a step back. When considering the options for a new automated system (or indeed an upgrade to your existing system) there needs to be a process review which encompasses your whole operation.
Will the system actually provide the efficiencies that you envisage? Do you need to change elements of your current processes in order to maximise your investment? Will your existing pallets still work?
Your automation provider should work with you to understand which pallets you currently use within your business. They should then agree pallet specifications for both size and structure and include a small amount of variance to allow for flexibility to ensure smooth running.
Did you know that using sub-standard, damaged or out of specification pallets can lead to down time and line stoppages, additional maintenance costs, as well as damage to both your new system and your product?
So, what pallet should you use?
Whether you are looking to use a pooled pallet, or buy a ‘white’ pallet, you should insist on pallets made from 100% solid wood with no composite blocks. These solid wood blocks offer increased strength and durability. Composite blocks can not only become swollen with water ingress, but they can also break down over time, leading to misalignment issues and particles falling into your automation.
At LPR, our customers tell us that our pallets are the best for their automated systems and that using our pallets has led to less downtime, damage and fewer maintenance visits. We work alongside our customers and offer on-site technical support to ensure that the process is as seamless as possible.
Why would you not use the best pallets in your new automated system? Our industry leading, red pallets, are amongst the highest quality available in the market – and our customer service is pretty great too!
