Cash cow for councils?
Councils in England made a profit, or generated a surplus if you prefer, of over half a billion pounds in 2011/12 from parking penalties.
The exact figure was £565m and those hit with fines can be forgiving for thinking they are being hit with an unofficial uncapped tax from councils, who are restrained by central Government cuts and council tax freezes.
Well done to to the RAC Foundation for pulling this information together in a report.
Meanwhile the Freight Transport Association has focused on a need for greater consistency from councils, highlighting that the 33 different London boroughs apply different rules for vehicles loading and unloading goods.
Its own research into penalty charge notices (PCNs) showed 27 companies paying £2.9 million in fines.
The 2012 survey also highlighted a 50% rise in PCNs issued by London boroughs. So, it’s not so surprising to see the revenue generated for all councils in England soaring past the half billion pound mark.
