THE ANNOUNCEMENT has been welcomed by the Government with Prime Minister Keir Starmer: “Amazon’s £40 billion investment adds another major win to Britain’s basket and is a massive vote of confidence in the UK as the best place to do business.
“It means thousands of new jobs—real opportunities for people in every corner of the country to build careers, learn new skills, and support their families, whether it’s cutting-edge AI or same-day delivery.”
The company will open four new giant state-of-the-art distribution centres each providing 2,000 jobs as well as a series of new delivery stations nationwide. Two of the new DCs in Melton, Hull and SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton have already been announced and will open in 2026 and 2027 respectively.
Another state of the art warehouse is proposed in the East Midlands, with one more in a location yet to be revealed.
The £40 billion investment includes part of a previously announced £8 billion spend to build, maintain and operate data centres by Amazon Web Services. In addition, some of the investment will also go to upgrading and expanding the Bray film studios it acquired in Berkshire last year.
Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy, said: “Amazon has been proud to serve our customers in the UK for the past 27 years. Thanks to their support, we’ve grown to be part of over 100 communities nationwide, from developing drone technology in Darlington to producing world-class entertainment at our studios in Bray.
“We now employ over 75,000 people and have become one of the UK’s largest private sector employers and taxpayers.”
Amazon is also offering 1,000 new full-time apprenticeship roles this year.
