BMW Group UK makes effort to reduce roll cage losses
3PL Neovia Logistics has switched from barcodes to GPS tracking to stop returnable roll cages and tote boxes disappearing from a BMW Group UK logistics operation.

ABOUT 40% of the returnable asset fleet, worth an estimated £320,000, was at risk of vanishing from the returns cycle each year. Neovia moves parts to more than 230 dealerships across the UK and Ireland, and each roll cage costs between £350 and £500 to replace.
Because third-party carriers deliver the assets, barcodes recorded only when they left Neovia’s facility. Once they were gone, there was no evidence to show where they had ended up or who was responsible. BMW Group UK made GPS-based tracking a condition of contract renewal, and Neovia chose Sensolus after a tender that began in December 2025.
Peak Technologies supplied the hardware, cloud platform, installation and managed services as one package. The Sensolus 1110 tracker fits the narrow face of a roll cage and is fixed with a foam pad or rivets, so sortation systems did not need changing. The system was fully operational within four months. A later batch of 3,500 tote boxes and 1,500 roll cages was tracking-ready within four to five weeks.
Each tracker has its own asset profile, including orientation monitoring that alerts Neovia if a cage tips over in transit. Geofences at dealerships record arrival and departure times. The data also shows site dwell times, and dock throughput which Neovia is feeding into logistics planning.
