SAINSBURY’S REVEALED plans to shut down the site, in Miles Gray Road, and another 381,106 ft2 warehouse in Heywood, Greater Manchester, as part of an overhaul that impacts more than 1,400 jobs.

The global 3PL has agreed to run the site until October 2025 and has taken on the workers at Basildon. A consultation will be launched with staff early 2025 with the option of staff being transferred to other DHL sites.

A spokesman for DHL Supply Chain said: "In line with Sainsbury’s supply chain transformation program announced in April, DHL has taken over the running of its Basildon site while it remains operational, which is currently scheduled to continue until October 2025. Colleagues at the site have been informed and will enter into consultation in early 2025 to discuss their options, including redeploying to other DHL operations locally."

Argos has occupied the Basildon warehouse since the 1990s. The DC occupies a site of 24.7 acres. The facility is owned by Blackstone which acquired it as part of a £335 million portfolio of eight properties sold by EPIC in 2020.
