THE £300 MILLION regional distribution centre totals 1.2 million ft2 and will facilitate the delivery of some 9,400 pallets daily to  around 150 stores nationwide.

The retailer says the new warehouse, which will employ 1,500, is part of its bid to “continue strengthening its infrastructure in order to cater for growing customer numbers.”

The building has also been developed to high sustainability standards and has a PV solar array on its roof that could generate 2 million kWh of electricity annually.

At certain times throughout the year the warehouse will run purely on solar power. Additionally, all of its delivery fleet is fuelled by biogas from food waste, supporting the discounter’s ambition to have 100% of its fleet diesel-free by 2030.

The warehouse, situated off the Woodside Link road close to J11a of the M1, will be the first Lidl distribution centre to feature automation.
