1280 sq m warehouse capacity expansion with Herchenbach building

A UK specialist producer was experiencing a steady growth in demand for its packed salads and private label prepared foods, with over 1,000 daily orders from global grocery retailers and well-known international foodservice operators.

The Kent-based company realised it needed more on-site warehouse capacity quickly, but was conscious that it could not afford to compromise on its particular requirements.

Stuart Rathbone, one of Herchenbach’s UK-based warehouse experts, visited the site to ensure he thoroughly understood the specifics of this request. The new warehouse would need to store essential supplies such as packaging, plastics, cutlery and other non-food items, and be strategically placed adjacent to the food preparation facilities. This would ensure a seamless and time-efficient production process and avoid any interruptions due to missing inputs or transport delays. Moreover, it needed to comply with a range of other important requirements.

As one of the customer’s project engineers emphasised: “We needed a high-quality building solution that could be installed rapidly and withstand the high coastal winds we have around here. The required building lifespan is at least 20 years, and we wanted the option to relocate the building thereafter. Another very important condition is a strict compliance with the UK’s pest control and various other regulations. As we are in the food industry – hygiene and impeccable processes are paramount to our operations.”

Analysing all the particular needs for the on-site warehouse after the meeting, the Herchenbach team carefully worked out the optimal configuration for the pre-fabricated building. A semi-permanent structure of 20m width, 64m length and 6.4m eaves height with aluminium frames was purchased. Walls made of trapezoidal sheet metal steel and a roof of high-grade industrial PVC tarpaulin helped ensure that the building would be able to endure the strong coastal winds. Inside the building a partition was installed, serving as a weather proof loading bay so that all food and hygiene standards could be strictly maintained regardless of circumstances. Even though the weather proved challenging already during installation, the building was installed within 10 working days and without any delays.

Herchenbach is the industry’s leading and trusted provider for a range of semi-permanent building solutions to capacity problems. Able to offer expert solutions to the most challenging circumstances, it is the UK’s only provider that manufactures its temporary building solutions itself. This allows them to not only better understand your needs but also to provide a solution that comes directly from the manufacturer’s technical desk itself, ensuring optimal and smart solutions for the most complicated situations.
