The battery firm won due to innovative moves on progressing the circular economy on lithium batteries.

The battery firm won due to a firm focus on progressing the circular economy on lithium batteries.

MIDAC BATTERIES business and finance director Rebecca Smith, said: “We are delighted to win this award. It is an incredible moment for our company, and we are truly honoured and proud to receive such recognition. This achievement reflects the hard work, innovation, and dedication of our entire team.”

Judges at the Archies added: “ This is a really important and sustainable solution to lithium battery provision. The responsible disposal of batteries is a key issue and this entry not only shows a commitment to a circular economy through recycling materials used in lithium cells but also provides a green alternative through lead acid-based batteries.”

The battery firm won due to a firm focus on progressing the circular economy on lithium batteries.

MIDAC, a European battery leader, champions sustainability through circular economy practices, recycled materials, and renewable energy. It innovates in both lead-acid and lithium-ion technologies while investing in R&D, workforce development, and low-emission logistics. MIDAC’s integrated approach advances eco-friendly battery solutions and supports Europe’s transition to sustainable energy systems.

The company champions environmental, social, and economic sustainability, maintaining ISO-certified systems for quality, environment, and safety. As a founder of the ECOPOWER consortium, MIDAC promotes battery recycling, with 97% of its lead battery production using recycled materials. MIDAC has invested €130 million in lithium battery recycling as part of the European IPCEI project and collaborates on several EU-funded initiatives focused on battery reuse, energy storage, and efficiency. Its advanced technologies reduce CO₂ emissions by 30% and support data-driven fleet management. With robust employee training and green logistics, MIDAC embeds sustainability at every level.

Major commitment

MIDAC has committed €130 million as a leading participant in the Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), an initiative focused on developing advanced battery ecosystems. Through this investment, MIDAC aims to build new production and recycling facilities that contribute to three of the four IPCEI workstreams:

  • WS2: Lithium-ion cell production
  • WS3: Battery pack assembly
  • WS4: Recycling and second-life solutions

This strategic expansion supports Europe’s transition to a greener energy future and positions MIDAC at the forefront of lithium battery innovation.

In parallel, MIDAC is involved in four EU-funded R&D projects that underscore its dedication to collaborative innovation and technological leadership:

  • REUSE: Focuses on the second-life application of lithium batteries in four key areas: residential storage, industrial backup systems, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
  • HESTIA: Develops high-voltage community battery systems for demand-response energy services. This solution integrates technical innovation with consumer engagement to deliver cost-effective and sustainable energy storage.
  • REACT: Aims to improve energy efficiency in remote and island communities by designing tailored energy systems. The project explores localised microgrid solutions and low-impact technologies to empower self-sufficiency.
  • FLEX Industries: MIDAC serves as a technical provider for an advanced energy storage system at the SUANFARMA pharmaceutical plant in Rovereto (TN), helping the facility manage energy more efficiently and sustainably.
