Can I carry out my own racking repairs?

Posted on Friday 4 September 2026

A question we’re asked all the time at SEMA is whether warehouse teams can carry out their own repairs. After all, the racking looks like a simple structure and with an maintenance team on hand it will be quicker and cheaper than getting the professional in. SEMA president Nick Betteley reports.

A question we’re asked all the time at SEMA is whether warehouse teams can carry out their own repairs. After all, the racking looks like a simple structure and with an maintenance team on hand it will be quicker and cheaper than getting the professional in. SEMA president Nick Betteley reports.

BUT HERE is the problem, that ‘simple’ racking is in fact a precisely engineered structure designed to hold tonnes of stock. It only takes one incorrect adjustment that deviates from the manufacturer’s specification for it to severely impact its load-bearing capacity. Get the repair wrong and it greatly increases the risk of that racking failing.

So, before working on the repairs, answer the following questions.

Have you categorised the racking damage?

Your Visual and Expert inspections should use a colour-coded classification system to identify the severity of the issue. Red for damage that require immediate action, amber where it’s severe and needs repairing within four weeks and green where the damage should be monitored.

Are you compliant?

Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, employers must ensure work equipment is maintained and in good working order. Racking is classed as work equipment and it’s your responsibility to ensure repairs are carried out by people with the correct knowledge and skills for the work.

Are your installers trained?

Repairs on storage equipment is precision work which is conducted by racking installers. The installer must use Original Equipment Manufacturer components, follow manufacturer’s specification, only undertake industry-approved repairs and keep a record of the work. To ensure the installer meets these requirements, check they have racking specific qualifications such as SEIRS (Storage Equipment Installers Registration Scheme) which trains on correct industry standards.

Can I send my employees on the SEIRS course?

Yes, anyone can attend SEIRS training. However, these skills need continuous practice to stay current and we recommend only sending employees who regularly install or repair racking.
