DHL Supply Chain consolidates haulage sub-contract volume

Posted on Wednesday 17 November 2021

DHL Supply Chain has engaged tech start-up, DigiHaul as its primary sub-contractor in a 10-year contract.

The appointment of DigiHaul will optimise DHL’s carrier network, helping to make its transport operation more resilient as it heads into the peak period, and contribute towards its reduction in carbon emissions by decreasing empty running.

Ian Clough, MD Transport, DHL Supply Chain UK&I says: “By moving our sub-contracted volume to DigiHaul, we’re able to access vital capacity in the UK transport network, particularly as we head into peak and continue to manage the challenges of the national driver shortage. The long-term benefits are equally important; empty running comes at a huge environmental and financial cost, and this is a great solution to address it.”

Through DigiHaul, DHL is able to tap into a network of 750 carriers, shoring-up availability ahead of the busiest period in the year and at a time when driver resource is in high demand.

By working with DigiHaul, DHL can ensure bookings across different sites are centrally coordinated, to maximise capacity on each vehicle and significantly reduce empty return journeys across its portfolio of customers. Over 600 loads a day will be booked, tracked and managed through the DigiHaul solution.

Despite the breadth of the DHL operation, DigiHaul can provide one central view of its sub-contraction needs and track demand across sites to enable better forecasting and planning.

Martin Willmor, CEO DigiHaul says: “In a relatively short time we’ve built a network of skilled and trusted carriers and have achieved the scale needed to become the primary sub-contractor for the UK’s largest logistics company. At a time when UK supply chains are under increasing pressure, we will be helping DHL unlock capacity and achieve the carbon savings that come from having a more efficient transport network.”
